Beaucerons life expectancy is 10 to 12 years. Like many large or deep-chested breeds, are prone to bloat, a sudden and life-threatening stomach condition. Some dogs can develop itchy skin conditions where baths with a high quality dog shampoo and conditioner is recommended. Flea control is also essential. Beauceron owners should educate themselves on what symptoms to look for and needs to respond immediately during this condition. Responsible breeders need to screen for conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, heart disease, eye problems, and allergies. As with all breeds, their ears and teeth need to be checked regularly.
A working Beauceron requires high nutritional demands, so check your dog’s condition regularly to be sure his diet is meeting his needs. Add a high quality multivitamin to complete the nutritional circle. A high-quality dog food, whether manufactured commercially or home-prepared can fulfill the high nutritional demand of Beauceron. Any diet should be appropriate according to the dog’s stage (puppy, adult, or senior). Some dogs are prone to getting overweight, which needs to be checked. Treats can be an important aid in training, but giving too many can cause obesity. Check with your vet if you have any concerns about your dog’s weight or diet.
Beaucerons are highly intelligent, loyal, and strongly devoted to their owners. This makes their training fairly easy. They require early socialization and obedience training at an early age. Don’t be too harsh during the training, particularly physical correction. Firm, fair, consistent training and handling are usually quite successful. They may express exuberant behaviors such as jumping on people and grabbing people and things with their mouths during the early training sessions.
The Beauceron is a powerful, athletic, and intelligent breed that needs lots of physical and mental challenges. This breed is for experienced owners. They require walks or a variety of outdoor locations and different types of exercise each day and an experienced owner who can provide the mental and physical activity they need. Use paw balm daily to protect their feet. The Beauceron was not bred to gather sheep. They are trained to perform in herding events, as well as protection work and activities like carting, mushing, and pulling a person who is on skis.
The Beauceron is a movie star! It appeared in the James Bond Film “Moonraker”. This is where the breed was first seen by many Americans.
